I would say, I love the results of the last competition.
This time the filesize restriction is very huge, isn“t it?!

... looking forward to competition 2008

:)
Questions!
micksam7 (IP:208.111.235.214) 2008-04-07 23:04:31

1. A "single part" demo? So basicly a single unified effect, no other scenes and whatnot?
2. How strict are you going to be to those rules? :)
3. Will report and give time for groups to change things if they aren't in line with the rules?
4. effects must be "visible all the time" - what about occational screen blur flashes in sync with music? As long as it happens throughout the demo, it's ok right?
5. The demo has to beable to run indefinately, correct? ;p

1. yes, basically a single unified effect (which can consist of multiple effects, as long as those effects are there to support the effect), which loops indefinetly.
2. It depends ;)
3. It depends (most likely yes, if you return your entry in time)
4. Totally acceptable, you can also have some particles bouncing off the screen of course. For example if you've some item emitting particles moving on the screen according to some path, the path can cross out of the screen.
5. Yes

Here's one example of what's ok and what's not:

Not ok: Jumping from some cool particle effect to rotating 3d-model and from there back to the particle effect.

Ok: Creating the rotating 3d-model and then adding the particle effects to it.

Also ok: Creating a bumbmapped tunnel with light-sources, flying 3d-models and dancing robot. As long as it's seemingly only one part, feel free to experiment :)

We kind of knew that the theme could raise some questions about the single part thing. Here are two examples of almost single part demos (both have kind of intro+outro/fade in/out with some texts, but the core of bot demos can be thought as single part with several effects running simultaneously.

Ballet Dancer by MFX:

Deepness in The sky by MFX:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=v9kCbulyYZI
This demo actually evolves slightly during the time, so it actually could be disqualified from the competition. (Of course, it depends on the amount and quality of the entries. If it was the only or one of three demos, it might not be disqualified :)).

The evolution in Deepness in the Sky is far from AND's Iconoclast and other productions, which have very nice continuous effect flow, but they clearly have several parts.

Screen flicker and flashing is totally acceptable. Also are other pulsating effects like bloom, blur, mosaic etc. The sequence of effect should be going through all the demo, not like "after 3 minutes, the screen starts to do blurring and flickering for next 2 minutes".
Effects can be synchronized to bass or other parts of music, but they should be synchronized through the whole demo.

Hopefully this gives you some more idea about the single part thing.
